Dr Robyn Torok is an expert in on-line radicalisation at Edith Cowan University in Perth. Recently she presented a research paper showing how social media such as Facebook is being used to radicalise teens.

Schools now run on technology. For some this is unwelcome and disturbing, for others it's inevitable and an enabling force. But all agree that technology has become central to the learning process, largely replacing pen and paper for students, teachers and administrators. You might remember, six months ago, how all the blogs about school websites (us included) – and indeed all websites – were talking about Google’s impending “Mobilegeddon” – the change in their ranking algorithm that would prioritise mobile-friendly websites and penalise those that aren’t mobile compatible. No doubt you received countless emails from providers (ourselves included, again), offering to fix the problem, but six months on we have to ask – was it a genuine threat to your website?

Students being radicalised by on-line material is now a sad reality. In the UK, legislation has recently come into force that specifies that schools have a duty of care to prevent pupils being radicalised. In Australia the ANZAC day terror plot involving teens in the UK and Australia communicating via social media highlights the issue.
